No More Salty Tears – A Devotion for Someone Who Lost a Loved One

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. Revelation 21:4 (ESV)
Grief can only be lessened with the hope of heaven. I pray this devotion feels like a sweet embrace for someone who lost a loved one. Be kind to yourself in this season.
A devotion for someone who lost a loved one
A pit formed in my stomach the second I heard the phone ring. I knew to expect this call at any moment, but the death of a loved one is something no one can ever truly prepare for. I listened to worship music and asked God to give me peace as I made the hour-long drive to the hospice unit. We gathered around my young niece’s bed, held her hand, and watched her take her last breath. The machines were silenced, and my father softly said, “She is free now.” A tangible peace washed over me after hearing him say those four simple words.
My niece lived a beautiful yet challenging twenty-six years with many physical and mental disabilities that had her in and out of hospitals most of her life. That July afternoon she woke up with a glorified body (Philippians 3:20-21), completely free from all pain and limitation. I can imagine Jesus wiping the last salty tear from her cheek as she flashed Him her unforgettable smile. She loved Jesus with all her heart and made sure others knew about Him too.
Although I miss her terribly, I take comfort in knowing all Jesus lovers will have a big family reunion one glorious day. We will celebrate the death of sin and never again taste the bitterness of tears. All brokenness will be restored. Peace will replace chaos, and we will walk freely in the garden with God (Revelation 22:1-5).

1. Close your eyes and imagine Jesus wiping away all your tears of sorrow and pain. Goodness, you have a beautiful smile!
2. Give yourself permission to be real with God. He can handle it.

My Comforter, You alone sustain me in my grief. Hold me close as I navigate this new season without my loved one. Replace my panic with calm, my fear with assurance, and my worry with peace. I will praise You through this heartbreak, because You are good, always good. Amen.
