Embracing Change this Fall

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."-- Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
Evidence of the changing season is everywhere, from pumpkins and gourds flocking the front of vegetable stands to slightly cooler mornings. Fall is an inviting season filled with the wonderful scents of freshly baked goods, your favorite football team on the weekends, and the vibrant colors of changing foliage. The popular phrase, "Fall is proof that change can be beautiful," aptly represents this time of year.
While change can certainly be beautiful, it can also be hard. We have all traversed arduous seasons of unexpected transitions. And while grieving unwelcome changes is perfectly acceptable, at some point, we must learn to embrace the changes by leaning into what God is teaching us in these seasons.
In my dentist's office, a sign hangs on the ceiling with a quote that reads, "Be so busy looking up that you don't have time to look back." While lying in that dentist's chair, this sign has often prompted me to reflect on all the times I begrudged the changes in my life and clamored to return to a previous state. How many times had I looked back instead of looking to God with open arms, a humble posture, and a surrendered heart?
I often forget how many times God has worked miracles through the trying seasons of my life. He has used trials and undesirable changes to usher in periods of refinement that encourage spiritual growth and dependence on our Almighty Father. I have always walked away changed for the better, even when it has taken years to see the fruits of the pruning.
Friend, if you are in a season of significant changes that are breaking you right now, know that our unchanging God loves you and will walk with you through this season. Use this time to lean into Jesus and strengthen your faith and trust in Him.

Reflection Questions to Help Embrace Changes:
Unwanted changes are evidence that we are not in control. God is in control. In what ways can you loosen your grip on controlling the narrative and let God use this season to walk in the newness of life?
Trees lose their leaves to survive the winter season and prepare for a fresh start in spring. God is also using your winter season to prepare you for a beautiful new start. Journal a couple of things that you are grateful for in this season, and write down a few things you look forward to when you emerge on the other side of this challenging time.
Let's Pray Together:
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for your unchanging faithfulness, compassion, and love. I know you are all so near to the crushed in Spirit, and I pray that you hold my hand in this season. Please give me the perseverance and patience to endure the changes and trials that are crushing me. Bless me with an overwhelming feeling of peace that fuels my faith. Help me to embrace the changes in my life and rest assured that everything is in your perfectly capable hands. I love you, Lord. Amen.
