We live in a world of hurt that requires the complicated work of forgiveness. Even small offenses, like lapses in patience and bad attitudes, beg us to practice giving or asking for forgiveness. Then there are the hurts that take longer to heal, such as abuse, abandonment, betrayal, and sharp words. These offenses require us to roll up our sleeves and do the real work of forgiving and repenting. Whether someone deserves or asks for our mercy, forgiveness is a gift for us. Lewis B. Until we go home to heaven, we will all succumb to the temptation of our flesh. Matthew 26:41 warns us to “Watch and pray so that we will not fall into temptation. Extending or receiving forgiveness helps reconcile relationships worth keeping or leave relationships with a better sense of peace and closure. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross was the ultimate reconciliation of us to God, who is always holy. He provided a way for us to be forgiven for our sins.
Sin causes us to turn away from God, creating a space that should not exist. When we repent, we close the gap.
Forgiveness can feel like a marathon you haven’t properly trained for. I spent months in long conversations with Jesus on my commute, in prayer, in reflection, and asking God all the hard questions to turn my heart of stone into a beating powerhouse again (Ezekiel 36:26). Eventually, I reached the finish line when I finally forgave my father and myself. I finally received the closure I needed ten years after my father passed away. It was a gift from God.
