September has always been an exciting month in our home. As soon as it begins, I can see the anticipation in my son’s eyes as he starts imagining all the ways he wants to celebrate his birthday.
For the past three years, we have celebrated differently. One year, his friends came over. Another year, we went hiking. This year feels especially significant because my little boy is turning thirteen—the beginning of his teenage years.
The little boy I once held in my arms is now a few inches taller than me. On the days when I am bone-tired and life feels overwhelming, his hugs somehow make everything feel a little lighter. He towers over me now, but his love, laughter, and warmth still make me feel like the luckiest mom.
He is funny, wonderfully humorous, and refreshingly straightforward. But what I admire most is how clear he is about who he is. At thirteen, he seems to know himself in ways I am still learning to understand about myself. He knows what he believes, what matters to him. Once he is convinced he is doing the right thing—he rarely worries about what others think.
And honestly, I sometimes envy that. Not because I want him to be someone else, but because I see in him a confidence and rootedness I am still growing into. Perhaps one of the sweetest gifts of motherhood is discovering that our children can teach us, too.
As he steps into this new chapter, I find myself praying less about the birthday he will celebrate and more about the life he will grow into. I want him to know God's love, walk in His truth, find courage in difficult moments, and grow into a young man whose heart is anchored in Christ.
